Murphy Lab Light Aged, First Artist Model in Gibson History

The first artist model in Gibson history, resurrected by the Custom Shop

The Nick Lucas Special is not a guitar you encounter every day. Introduced in 1926 as the very first Gibson artist model, built at the request of Nick Lucas — The Crooning Troubadour, one of the greatest American entertainers of his time — this instrument is a direct connection to the golden age of the acoustic guitar. Lucas made one condition for his collaboration with Gibson: build a guitar to my specifications. What he wanted was a compact body with unusual depth, for a bass response that rivaled much larger instruments. The result defined a genre.

Gibson Custom brings that vision back with the 1929 Nick Lucas Special Light Aged. The thermally aged red spruce top resonates with an openness and complexity that new wood cannot match, while the mahogany back and sides provide the typical warmth and directness that makes this model so beloved. The scalloped X-brace supports the top in a way that keeps the dynamic bandwidth maximally open. From soft fingerpicking to powerful strumming, this instrument responds with a sensitivity that only the best acoustic guitars offer.

The mahogany neck features a C-profile with a rosewood fretboard, 20 frets over a 24.75 inch scale length and a 12-inch radius. The Mother-of-Pearl Nick Lucas inlays are historically accurate and distinctive. The rosewood bridge with an open slot, bone saddle and nut, and TUSQ bridge pins ensure proper vibration transfer. Gold Waverly tuners with ivory-colored oval buttons complete the hardware. The Murphy Lab Light Aging gives the guitar the subtle play wear and appearance of an original 1920s model, without compromising structural integrity. Delivered in a luxurious Red Line hardshell case.

Anyone looking for an instrument that is both a historical document and a ready-to-play masterpiece will find the 1929 Nick Lucas Special Light Aged to be one of the most extraordinary guitars Gibson Custom has ever released.
