Gibson 1929 Nick Lucas Special Light Aged – The very first artist model

The Nick Lucas Special isn't just any guitar—it was the very first Gibson artist model and a milestone in the history of acoustic guitars. Nick Lucas, known as The Crooning Troubadour , was one of the greatest American entertainers of the 1920s: performing solo, jazz with big bands, playing for European royalty, and radio stars who first played with a guitar. His influence on artists like Merle Travis and the popularization of the guitar as a solo instrument is undeniable.

When Gibson asked him to play their guitars, Lucas set a condition: build one to my specifications. The result? The Nick Lucas Special, introduced in 1926, with a compact yet deeper body for a full bass response—a rich, complex tone in a small body.

Today, Gibson Custom proudly brings back the 1929 Nick Lucas Special Light Aged . This guitar is based on those early artist models and combines historical authenticity with modern craftsmanship.

  • Body: Mahogany, deeper than an L-00, with a thermally aged red spruce top. Body depth: approximately 10.37 cm at the headstock and approximately 11.48 cm at the tailpiece.

  • Binding & Rosette: Multiple layers of gold sparkle; L-2-style rosette with subtle gold sparkle.

  • Neck & Fingerboard: C-shaped mahogany neck, 20-fret rosewood fingerboard with mother-of-pearl Nick Lucas inlays.

  • Hardware: Gold Waverly tuners with ivory oval buttons, rosewood bridge with open lock, bone saddle and nut, and TUSQ® bridge pins.

  • Finish: Argentine Grey with Murphy Lab Light Aging , which gives the guitar the subtle playwear and appearance of an original from Gibson's golden era.

  • Case: Luxury Red Line hardshell case.

With its small body, impressive depth, and powerful, warm tone, the 1929 Nick Lucas Special Light Aged is one of the most distinctive and iconic acoustic guitars Gibson has ever produced. A masterpiece for any player who wants to experience Gibson's craftsmanship and history.
