Gibson 1929 Nick Lucas Special Light Aged – The very first artist model
The Nick Lucas Special isn't just any guitar—it was the very first Gibson artist model and a milestone in the history of acoustic guitars. Nick Lucas, known as The Crooning Troubadour , was one of the greatest American entertainers of the 1920s: performing solo, jazz with big bands, playing for European royalty, and radio stars who first played with a guitar. His influence on artists like Merle Travis and the popularization of the guitar as a solo instrument is undeniable.
When Gibson asked him to play their guitars, Lucas set a condition: build one to my specifications. The result? The Nick Lucas Special, introduced in 1926, with a compact yet deeper body for a full bass response—a rich, complex tone in a small body.
Today, Gibson Custom proudly brings back the 1929 Nick Lucas Special Light Aged . This guitar is based on those early artist models and combines historical authenticity with modern craftsmanship.
